About us

People who actually live with the gentle giant

Karin at home with two of her blue Great Danes

DayStar Great Danes started the way most things in this breed do, with one dog who quietly rearranged the whole household. Two decades, a good many litters, and an unreasonable quantity of dog hair later, this is where we write down what we have learned, so the next family can skip a few of the mistakes we had to make in person.

Our philosophy

A Great Dane gives you eight to ten years if you are fortunate. That short clock sits behind everything we believe about this breed: that the people who bring these dogs into the world, and the people who sell them, carry a real responsibility for how those few years go. So we do not chase fashions, we do not dress up “rare” colours that come at the cost of a dog's hearing or sight, and we will never pretend a puppy is something you pick up on a whim.

What you'll find here

Long, practical, honest guides. We cover the unglamorous parts other sites skip: how to read a health panel, how to move money safely when you import a puppy, how to spot a fake breeder behind a beautiful website, and what the first ninety days at home actually demand of you. If a topic could cost you money, heartbreak, or a dog's wellbeing, we would rather over-explain it than leave you guessing.

A word on trust

We are owners and breeders, not veterinarians. Everything here is written from lived experience and careful research, but it is general information — not a substitute for advice from your own vet, who knows your dog. When we are uncertain, we say so. When we recommend something, it is because we would do it ourselves.

We are not a substitute for the breed's official bodies, and we will happily point you to them. For breed standards and responsible-ownership information, see the American Kennel Club and the Great Dane Club of America; for verifiable health-test results, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.
